The Social Studies assignment wanted us to write on government stuffs and i found a very interesting article on the net about elitism in Singapore.
(It is about an 18 year old daughther of an MP,Wee Shu Min, launched a scathing attack on Singaporean Derek Wee for voicing concerns on job security and age discrimination.She described Derek as a “stupid crackpot”, “the sadder class”, over-reliant on the government in Singapore where society is “far too survival of the fittest” and signed off with: “Get out of my elite uncaring face”.
Other condescending terms: Derek is a typical “wretched, under-motivated, over-assuming leeches” specimen of Singapore. He has a “middle-class under-educated penchant” for complaining and should get on with life.)All these highlighted information comes from The Sunday Star, Oct 29, 2006
First a brief introduction on elitism,it is the belief or attitude that the people who are considered to be the elite.They may be a group of people with outstanding talents,wealth, experience and other attributes.This is the meaning of it obtained from wikipidea.Singapore elitism can be said to start off from Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who believed that a person's intelligence is inherited from his/her parents and it was this man that done it all for Singapore.
Singapore was led by Mr Lee Kuan Yew for many years where it constantly improves until the form it is now, an advanced developing country.The government plays a important part in this and especially the ministers in Singapore who had slogged for many many years for the country.This is where the important point about elitism comes in, it is practised in Singapore for many years where ministers are chosen based on their results,professional or business achievements, and particularly those who are related to past achievers.Those who are from the middle class group can come in the government too, but very few made it through.Singapore has been said to practise meritocracy and will never change this principle, but is this meritocracy?I personally do not agree that it is, because by looking at relation with past achievers, that already is napotism, the total opposite of meritocracy.
In the case shown above in the newspaper article, that is totally shocking to me.It is so because an 18 year old girl insulted a man named Derek Wee who is much older and more experienced in life than she is.This is very rude in my opinion and especially saying these comments straight to the media.She used the fact that she finished junior college with top honours and her father is an important figure in the government to make comments about this man. This is the problem with elitism, because it gives those who call themselves "elite", pride and they will soon be blinded by it.They will be arrogant, thinking themselves as more superior than others and this will not benifit Singapore at all in the near future.In the article, it said,"hundreds of angry Singaporeans consider her remarks as elitist and insensitive against the common people." This shows that the public is not happy with her comments, but soon after that, the MP backed up her comments, supporting it, which made the matters a lot worse.
In the earlier years of his time as the Prime Minister,Lee Kuan Yew had already carved elitism into the hearts of the people in the government, and it has created a big problem.Besides the public not happy with such comments, the Singapore government will also be unable to interact completely with the poorer people.They would not be able to understand these people's feelings and could not show sympathy to them.This will effect the people's trust towards our government and may even start to have bad impressions on them, especially after those rude comment by Wee Shu Min.The worst scenario could be riots happening in Singapore again and i believe that no one wants that at all.So i think that they need to settle this problem on elitism as fast as possible.

The week was nt that nice..i kept falling sick, dunno wad stomach flu virus, sigh, it is realli the season of ppl falling sick, there are so much ppl sick in the sch..The worst thing is that i actually missed the A maths and chem test, and nxt week it will be a lot more burdens for me -.-.but anyway, the teachers have been gving us so much hws and tests, until every1 in the class is so stressed up, its realli hard to cope wif the hws but the teachers jus wont gv us lesser -_- sianz la.i havnt been doing my hws oso for the past few days and they are piling up..The sec 3 bonding camp is also coming, and i dun feel like going..its realli long but its compulsory-.-.Aloy and some of them have been saying that sentosa is haunted....kind of creepy...but i dun realli beleive in this kind of stuffs, i jus trust in God that he will protect me, so i am nt reali bothered by wad they are saying XD.

At last, it is time to write the 3rd entry for the journal, the qns is basically feedback for the past 6 weeks.Actually, i didnt seem to realise that it was alr the 6th week.Time passes extremly fast, and i have alr adopted to my class 3K'06 =).It realli seemed vry fun, all the lessons we had 2gether and all the time spent basically.We also had a gd time wif Mr Tan, he is a gd and humorous teacher XD.Test had been quite ok but managing the time is harder in sec 3 now as the no of subjects has increased.We also start to spend more time in CCAs and other stuffs in sch as we get older but i felt that once i am in 3k,most of the stress will be gone bcos we meet our friends and teachers like Mr tan =).For the hate part, i dun hate anithing abt 3k, but on the other hand, i kinda enjoy it and love it, and it is quite amazing how we managed to get 2gether and tick as a class so soon after the year started.We were from diff classes last year but now we alr have found our new identity as 3K and this is amazing.latly,3K'06 rox!! XD

Sigh...now is monday morning and i am supposed to be in sch..however, sickness has made me stay at home..every1 must have alr went for the physics test but i need to take it tml -_-.sigh.sickness realli sog.anyway, the week was quite ok, but sec 3 stuffs are getting more and more stressful, especially as choir is oso getting tougher.We are beggining to learn songs for the esplanade concert on July and the songs are quite tough -.-.Sigh..i jus realised that lower sec life is so much easier..but u cannot jus turn baq..k then, i am going back to slp XD

AH!wad a busy week this was.nxt week still have test and stuffs zzz.Especially on Monday, there is maths probabilty test and a SS test, the strees of sec 3 is really coming up vry fast.But i tink i can still cope wif it XD.Now when i am writing this, i still havnt do my hw yet -.-and learn 4 test zzzz.Anyway, Mr tan said to write about gattaca, a movie about DNA engineering.i think the movie was ok in general, and it has some vry fantastic scenes too.But i am most shocked and impressed by the idea of the story.Gattaca tells of the future when every1 will be almost equal.There will not bve anymore sickness and stuffs lidat.Every1 will have talents and will be able to achieve sumthing in their life.Even a doctor in Gattaca says this"even if u conceive 1000 times, u will not get this kind of baby" well maybe wad i wrote is a bit wrong, forgot about it alr XD.And so, every1 is like perfect.The movie tells about Vincent, a guy who is not perfect as he is naturally born.He manages to borrow anth person's identity and work in Gattaca, a space station.His dream was to fly to space.I admired Vincent for his bravery of suffering all tribulations to acheive his goal.it was impressing and touching as how the movie goes.It was a wonderful Movie XD

Today,Its Chinese New Year!!Happy Chinese New Year Every1!!Its such a nice evnt.Every1 can sit on a atble and eat wif their beloved family members.There wer laughters and jokes yesterday on the table me and my family was occupying.And the nicest is still hong bao XD. We went to bai nian today and recieve quite some hong bao XD.In the sch on friday, the chinese new year performance was also nt bad.there were all kinds of performance, from skits to dance, but we were made to wait for so long b4 the concet start-.- Also, there was that indian man from Malaysia and he actually said Gong Xi Fa Cai, the pronounciation was quite accurate but i do not think he even understands wad that means, i tink he jus memorise it form a script...hopefully tml will get more hong bao XD

Today is monday of the 3rd wk...and the HWs are already piling up!!Argh, the stress on sec 3 is realli different from sec 2, wer we can still relax and play...how i miss those days...anyway, it has been vry busy lately in the choir bacause of the upcoming performance on friday.They have been giving lots of pracs and it was exhausting...sigh....The weather have also been nt that gd recently, last wk it was raining heavily all day long, lots of ppl get sick, including me.2day was nt that bad bcos we got dismissed at 1215 XD and the HWs are nt that much and so i get to relax at home and find time to write an entry like now.i cant actually believe that i have a blog!!i didnt even have the little bit of intention to make 1 but it is homework given by Mr Tan...anyway,the clouds are getting darker again -.- and i feel its going to rain again.......
